When Deean and Joe Ferrone began looking into franchising, they knew they wanted a work-life balance and the flexibility that would come with owning their own business. Deean had been an educator for 13 years previously, and Joe was in commercial insurance. “Being an elementary school teacher prior to become a business owner, meant that I had very little business background, but I knew I wanted something that was still connected to kids,” says Deean. Joe shares that he always knew he wanted to be a small business owner. “The Pigtails & Crewcuts model just struck me as something that would be both profitable and have room for growth.”
The opportunity came along for the Ferrones to purchase an existing Pigtails & Crewcuts salon in Westminster, CO. From there, they acquired two additional salons in Northfield and Parker, CO, with plans to develop a fourth location in Longmont in the near future. They have two young boys and want to be able to dedicate time to them while also being business owners, so the work-life balance of Pigtails & Crewcuts has been ideal for their family.
The Ferrones chose Pigtails & Crewcuts Franchise because the Core Values aligned with what they wanted in a small business, it was kid-oriented, fun, flexible, and had the opportunity for growth. “We were looking for a business that had good profit margins, the chance to be involved in the community, and a like-minded organization that had systems in place to help us be successful,” says Deean. One of her personal goals with being a franchise owner is having the ability to expand herself professionally. “There is always more to learn when it comes to business, managing people, and also understanding financial statements, but the thing I enjoy most is the flexibility.”
Deean and Joe benefit from the semi-absentee structure of the Pigtails & Crewcuts ownership model, but also spend time in the salon. “I really enjoy being in front of customers, and also having that real physical aspect of a brick-and-mortar business,” Joe says. They are currently looking to refine their business structures to help the salons run consistently without their daily presence. This semi-absentee model has allowed Deean and Joe the ability to focus on their family and other businesses, which has been an important aspect for them from the start of their journey into franchising. “We enjoy many things about owning Pigtails & Crewcuts salons. The direction and connections from being part of a bigger network has been invaluable, the support from our FSS and the entire team has allowed us to grow, the kid-oriented aspect is just fun and adorable.” Deean says.
